We all know Volvo excavators have a very high market share in regions like North America, Northern Europe, and Northeast China. These areas share a common characteristic: low temperatures and frequent extreme cold weather. This is extremely unfavorable for excavator operations. Bucket teeth made from ordinary steel are highly susceptible to cold brittleness in such environments (e.g., -30°C), experiencing a steep drop in impact toughness and a significant risk of brittle fracture.
To enhance bucket teeth’s low-temperature impact toughness in such extreme cold, SUPER has dedicated efforts to develop specialized bucket teeth. These teeth maintain low-temperature impact toughness while improving wear resistance. Please read on this page to learn how we achieved this.

First, we selected low-temperature toughness steel grades to enhance impact resistance at extreme cold temperatures. For instance, increasing nickel content significantly improves low-temperature toughness and plasticity; adding vanadium and niobium optimizes microstructural conditions, making your bucket teeth more crack-resistant, stable, and durable. We also implemented measures such as reducing impurity content to minimize stress concentration points in steel components under low-temperature environments.
We implemented targeted improvements in our heat treatment processes. For instance, by adopting low-temperature isothermal quenching and multiple, extended low-temperature tempering cycles, we enhance the teeth’s low-temperature toughness while maintaining high hardness and wear resistance. This approach minimizes residual processing stresses and prevents cracks caused by multiple factors such as thermal shock and mechanical impact.
We have also implemented targeted structural adjustments. For instance, to enhance impact resistance and energy storage capacity, we have appropriately increased the cross-sectional area of the teeth root and load-bearing zone.
Based on Volvo’s recommendations, we advise using Pick Point or Twin Pick series bucket teeth in extremely cold and hard operating conditions. Their sharp profile, high penetration capability, and strong impact force minimize resistance when encountering frozen ground, enabling rapid penetration through frozen layers while reducing the risk of low-temperature fracture.
