Why are the crusher hammer heads so important?
Hammer heads for crushers are the core working parts of Impact Crushers and Hammer Stone Crusher. They have high hardness, strength, wear resistance, toughness, erosion resistance, and other properties. The hammer heads are mounted on the rotors by hammer pins. When the crushers are working, the rotors generate powerful impact and crushing forces, breaking large rock, stone, ore, coal, or other materials fed into the crusher into small pieces through impact crushing. After several rounds of crushing, the crusher could reduce the materials to the target sizes we wanted. The hammer heads determine the mechanical properties, working efficiencies, and output of the crushers. They are the result of materials science, precious casting manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and rich experience in the GET and construction machine industries.
Why do hammer heads wear out so easily?
Hammer Stone Crusher are often used in outdoor construction fields under extremely harsh conditions. As the core parts of impact rock crushers and hammer crushers, the stone crusher hammer heads for crushing strike rocks and other materials of varying sizes, hardness, and sharpness. Some rocks, such as granites and basalts, have the highest hardness. And rocks like limestone and iron ore are more abrasive. Some other rocks are more prone to erosion, such as sulfur-bearing ores and chemical wastes. As you can see, the crusher hammer heads are subjected to complex conditions and are continuously impacting stones at high speed. So, the hammer heads are one of the largest consumable parts in crushers. They will fail due to abrasive wear after a certain amount of time, and will be replaced by new ones.
The quality of hammer heads is closely related to crusher performance and operational efficiency. In addition, they affect the working costs. It is very important for you to get high-quality crusher hammer heads at a reasonable price.
Structure of the Hammer Heads
A crusher hammer head for a crusher consists of a hammer handle and a working end. The working end requires higher hardness and wear resistance, as it contacts materials at high speed for extended periods. Although the handle does not strike the material, it experiences an enormous bending moment when the rotor rotates at high speed. If the Rock Crusher handle’s strength and toughness are insufficient, it is very easy to fracture while working. Once the handle breaks, the entire crushing system becomes out of balance, which will accelerate wear on other hammer heads. It can even cause the crusher to overheat, vibrate, and make unusual noises, triggering a chain reaction. The work has to stop and start to replace new hammers.
As you can see, both the handle and working end of the crushing hammer heads play vital roles. When you purchase new crusher hammer heads, please don’t only focus on the working ends and overlook the importance of the handle. If you want to know more technical information about the handle and working end, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Crusher Hammer Head Materials
Are you also facing any difficulties, like other customers, when choosing crusher hammer head materials? Different crusher has different requirement for crusher hammers, like Rock Crusher, Portable Rock Crusher, Small Rock Crusher, Mini Rock Crusher, Gold Rock Crusher, and Hammer Rock Crusher. There are many materials used to manufacture crusher hammer heads, such as common materials like high-manganese steel, high-chromium alloy, cemented carbide, and bimetallic composite. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Their strengths can only be realized if they are put in the most suitable working conditions. We believe that you can have a deeper understanding of these materials after my introduction and can choose the right material according to your needs.
High-manganese Steel
High-manganese steel refers to an alloy steel with a manganese content of over 10%. It has two main characteristics: first, its surface forms a hardened layer under strong impact, and its wear resistance becomes extremely high. The second is that it has exceptional toughness, unmatched by other materials.
However, when the feed materials like stones are relatively soft, the hardness and impact force are insufficient, so the hardened layer is difficult to form, and the crusher hammer has reduced wear resistance. So, high-manganese steel is not suitable for crushing soft feed materials.

High-chromium Alloy Cast Iron
High-chromium alloy is a premium wear-resistant material with wide applications. It has extremely high hardness and excellent wear resistance. However, the toughness is relatively poor. Especially for the hammer working-end section, without special supports, it is easy to break. High-chromium alloy is suitable for feed materials with high wear resistance but low impact resistance, such as quartz, granite, and iron ore.

Cemented Carbide
Compared with other materials, cemented carbide has extremely high hardness. It is widely used in industrial manufacturing and medium- and high-end manufacturing. However, the cost of cemented carbide is very high. If we use it to produce crusher hammer heads, it doesn’t offer any pricing advantages. So, it’s not an ideal material given the pricing and costs.

Bimetallic Composite Material
Based on the requirement for properties such as hardness, wear resistance, strength, and toughness of the hammer head. However, it is difficult for a single material to meet all the requirements. To use different materials on different parts of the crusher hammer head is a better choice. Bimetallic composite material meets this requirement.
The Bimetallic composite material uses high-hardness, wear-resistant materials on the hammer working end and high-hardness, high-toughness materials on the hammer handle. It successfully solves the problem that a single material is bound to have shortcomings in some respect.

Types and Applications of Crusher
A crusher is used to break and crush large materials into smaller sizes or into powder. The way it works is to feed rock, stone and other materials into the crushing room, where the crushing parts crush them to the required small size, producing materials or powders. Then feed them into a screening machine for screening and sorting.
Based on crushing mechanisms, crushers can be classified into compression crushers, impact crushers, and shear crushers.
Compression crushers
The working principle is that the fed materials are compressed between a moving surface and a stationary plate, thereby reducing their size. The types of crushers include Jaw crushers, Gyratory crushers, Cone crushers, Roller crushers, etc.

Wear-Resistant Alloy Steel | M+B+A | ≥25 | ≥45 |
Wear Parts for Fine Crushers, Coal Crushers and Sand Making Machines
The working principle of an impact crusher is that the fed materials are struck by crushing components in the crushing room, propelled toward the impact plate, where they are struck and crushed, and also crushed as the material pieces collide with one another. This type of crushers includes: Hammer Crushers, Impact Crushers, and Ring Hammer Crushers.

Shear-type crushers
Shear-type crushers work by exploiting the strength characteristics of materials to break them through processes such as shearing, stretching, bending, puncturing, and fracturing.
The application of crushers
Crushers are widely used in mining, quarrying, sand and gravel, cement plants, brick factories, power generation, chemical processing, metallurgy, recycling, and other industries. SUPER crusher hammers are widely used in various types of rock crushers, including portable rock crushers, small rock crushers, rock crushing equipment, crusher machine, and mini rock crushers for mining, quarrying, and aggregate production.
Good or Bad Quality?
Do you know how to evaluate a crusher hammer head’s quality, good or bad? Do you have similar doubts when choosing a new supplier for crusher hammer heads? Below, I will provide a systematic explanation of the performance metrics used to assess a hammer head’s quality.
Hardness
Hardness is one of the basic specifications for a crusher. Hammer heads are usually made of striking materials with different hardness without interruption. The required sizes of stones could only be obtained by striking the hammer heads. If the hardness of a hammer head does not meet the standard, the crusher will not produce materials of the required specific particle size efficiently. The crusher’s entire working efficiency will be very low, and the output of the crusher will be reduced rapidly. The production cost will be higher accordingly.
Wear Resistance
Wear resistance is another basic specification for a crusher. It has the same importance as hardness. In addition to crushing materials through impact, the hammer heads are also subjected to constant friction from the material against their surfaces. Lower wear resistance can easily cause the part or the entire crusher hammer to become smaller. It could lead to wear and loss of function in a short time. On the other hand, it could cause an imbalance in the crushing system, and other well hammer heads will wear out at a higher rate, which will affect the crusher’s overall working efficiency.

Toughness
Toughness and hardness are inversely related. In a single material, increasing hardness will reduce toughness. While increasing toughness reduces its hardness. Hardness determines the service life of a hammer head, and toughness determines whether the hammer head breaks during work. Once a hammer head breaks, the entire hammer head immediately fails and can no longer work. Manufacturers of crusher hammer heads have to strike a balance between hardness and toughness, allowing both to be optimized as much as possible.
In addition, there are other specifications for a crusher hammer head, such as fatigue resistance, abrasive resistance, and heat resistance. These specifications influence the operational efficiency and service life of a hammer crusher. Hammer heads experience various complex operating conditions within the crusher. Under prolonged, continuous impact and fracturing, a crusher hammer head should still perform its function, not be affected by heat, not have its size decrease during striking and fracturing, and not develop cracks that could shorten its service life. All of these require a crusher hammer head with high hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, as well as superior anti-fatigue, abrasive, and thermal resistance, along with other physical properties.
When you choose or test a new hammer head, please consider the above specifications. This is more scientific and clear.
Heat Treatment

Why is Heat Treatment Necessary for Crusher Hammer?
We have introduced a method for evaluating whether the quality of a crusher hammer head is good or bad. In other words, certain physical properties.
But in production and manufacturing, it is difficult to ensure that all these properties reach a good condition with a simple process alone. I believe that when you use some hammer heads, some fail quickly. There are several reasons, such as poor raw materials, structural design issues, and immature casting and manufacturing technologies. There’s another important thing- the hammer head didn’t undergo proper heat treatment. The hammer head has issues with its physical and mechanical properties, so it is prone to internal cracking, which can lead to breakage and failure in a short time.
Perform effective heat treatment: after casting, place the hammer head in a furnace, maintain the temperature at the specified level for a specified period, then remove it and place it in a cooling medium to cool at the specified rate.

What is heat treatment
Heat treatment is a necessary process for casting and forging product manufacturing. After heat treatment, the hardness, wear resistance, and toughness of castings will increase by 1-3 times compared to before treatment.
Heat treatment methods
Heat treatment methods vary depending on the design, application, and performance requirements of the castings. Examples include through-hardening, surface heat treatment, and chemical heat treatment.
Heat treatment methods for crusher hammer heads include annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering.
Annealing can make the internal microstructure of the hammer head more balanced, resulting in a more uniform microstructure and composition, reducing hardness, and improving ductility.
Normalizing can refine the grains, eliminate internal defaults, and support physical performances.
Quenching increases the martensite of the internal structure, making the hammer heads harder and improving toughness. The hammer heads are more durable.
Tempering eliminates the internal stresses caused by quenching, reducing its fracture and improving the hammer head’s comprehensive performance.
SUPER Heat Treatment Process
SUPER processes hammer heads by high-temperature quenching and low-temperature tempering.
The quenching temperature is 1050℃, maintained for 15 to 20 hours.
The tempering temperature is 950℃, and the tempering time is 8 hours.
After such heat treatment, the hardness increased by 1-2 times, and the wear resistance increased by more than 2 times.
