What Are Hammermill Hammer Heads Used in Recycling Plants?

The recycling industry hammermill hammer head’s working principle is generally similar to other industries. It is the crusher’s key part. It determines the crusher’s working efficiency, crushing quality, shapes of the crushed materials, particle size, energy consumption, and downtime frequency. It is installed inside the crusher chamber, coupled to the rotor and driven by its rotation to maintain high rotational speed. During high-speed operation, the hammer head collides with the recycled material entering through the feed opening. Using the hammer head’s hardness and wear resistance, it continuously strikes and wears the crushing materials, crushing them into the required sizes, then discharging them from the crusher chamber.

Unlike other industry applications, the crushing materials in this industry are more stable, like limestone, marble, granite, coal, clinkers, and so on. They are relatively easy to manage, and their predictions regarding risks and unexpected situations are fairly reliable. However, in the recycling crushing industry, recycled materials may be mixed and contain more items. For example, demolition debris may contain concrete rubble, asphalt, and other materials, or a mixture of rebar, glass, stones, and other materials. These mixtures are quite different. Reinforcing bars are exceptionally hard and highly ductile. Glass, on the other hand, has high modulus of elasticity and high abrasion resistance, which makes it prone to brittle fracture. In that case, the hammer mill must have exceptional comprehensive skills to face the challenges posed by these mixtures.

Risks and Challenges

What kinds of risks and challenges will recycling crusher hammer heads face? What are the main failures? The analysis below can help you identify these risks in advance and prevent them.

★ Rapid wear of the hammer working end

Because crusher hammers in the recycling industry strike various recycled materials, some are extremely hard, and some are highly abrasive, which can make the hammer heads lose weight, become round, and have reduced thickness, share ability, and effective strike quality, which will decrease significantly. Wear and fatigue are the two main failure forms of crusher hammer heads in scrap metal crushing.

★ Fatigue cracking and blistering around the pinhole

When the hammer head swings around the shaft, the pinhole and the shaft will strike repeatedly. As the hammer head will experience impact force from the working end during swinging, this causes severe damage to the pinhole surface. In severe cases, it will cause fatigue cracks, which will gradually expand into pinhole cracks or break.

★ Overloading break caused by abnormal impact

If there are huge-sized, thick steel, uncrushed recycled materials, motor blocks, or exceptionally heavy scrap steel. All of these can overload the material beyond the capacity of the crusher hammer heads. The high impact force may not cause the hammer head to fail immediately, but could generate cracks or defects on the sides of the hammer heads, leading to failure in future work.

★ Pinhole enlargement

During repeated impacts and sliding between the pin hole and the shaft, the pin hole will gradually wear. When the size of the pin hole further increases, the swing gap between the crusher hammer and the shank will also increase. This will make the hammer’s impact even more intense.

★ Shaft failure

During the wear between the pin hole and the shaft, besides the failure of crack or swing caused by pin hole enlargement wear, the shaft will also suffer rapid wear and strike. This will make the crusher hammer head prone to breakage and frequent replacement. The shaft’s wear also intensified the hammer’s impact.

★ Excessively high operating temperatures cause high-manganese steel to become brittle.

Based on our measurements, the temperature at the crusher chamber discharge port could reach 400℃. This temperature promotes carbide precipitation, causing high-manganese steel to become brittle. This will cause the high-manganese steel to become brittle, making it prone to partial or complete fracture.

★ Changes in feed composition lead to a sudden drop in service life

If the recycled materials shift from light steel items like home appliances and automobiles to heavy steel, the crusher hammer heads are not suitable for crushing heavy steel. Dirt and rubber in the crusher chamber will also prompt the crusher hammer head’s consumption and failure.

Common Recyclable Materials and the Challenges They Pose to Hammer Heads

Scrap Vehicle Bodies

Scrap vehicle bodies are mainly made of thicker steels, including reinforced beams, axles, engines, glass, rubber, and plastic housings. This causes the hammer head’s loads to change significantly. Thin steel will lead to repeated cutting and wear. Thick steel will deliver an instant, strong impact force. Positions around the pinhole will have fatigue damage.

White Goods

White goods include refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and so on. They are mainly thin steel. These recycling materials have compressors, motors, Glass, insulation materials, concrete, etc. These materials don’t have a high impact, but they are very hard to harden sufficiently. Compressors and motors can generate a strong impact force by accident, causing the hammer head or pin hole to crack or break.

Lightweight Scrap Steel

Lightweight scrap steel includes tinplate, thin sheets, metal cabinets, ventilation ducts, and so on. They are very light and easy to change forms. During crushing, they are also easily cut and scratched, and the crusher hammer heads wear out repeatedly. Due to insufficient work hardening, manganese steel will experience relatively rapid wear on the water surface.

Electronic Waste

Electronic waste contains a mixture of plastics, copper, aluminum, Glass, ceramics, and other materials. Their size and ingredient changes are quite significant. Glass and ceramics will cause abrasive wear for the crusher hammer head. When metal and plastic mix, the impact force is highly unstable. Fine powder and high dust levels will influence the crusher’s working efficiency.

Wire, Steel Wire, and Long Scrap Pieces

They are soft with better extension strength. Very hard to break through direct impact. They often become entangled around the hammer head or rotor, reducing the hammer head’s ability to swing freely and leading to blockages, overheating, and other issues that affect its performance.

how to choose the right crusher hammer head material according to these recycling material challenges for crusher hammer heads?

Workers at SUPER casting factory are producing wax patterns for crusher hammer heads

If you plan to crush automobile bodies and steel plates, we suggest using high-manganese steel or high-toughness alloy steel to reduce the risk of breakage due to their lower impact resistance.

If the crushing material is White goods, tin cans, light scrap steel, and other insufficiently hard and strong wear-resistant recycling materials, you should choose high-wear-resistance steel as the main material for your crusher hammer head.

If the recycling material has both a medium-level impact force and high wear resistance, a single material is not a good option. You should choose bimetallic composite materials.

If the feed composition changes frequently, standard materials can lead to inconsistent hammer head service life. In such cases, you should prioritize ensuring the hammer heads’ wear resistance.

Selecting Hammermill Hammer Heads for Concrete Recycling

For ordinary reinforced concrete, at medium reinforcement content, the crusher hammer head should strike a balance between impact resistance and wear resistance.

When there’s more reinforcement content, a large feeding quantity, or a higher risk of foreign objects, you should choose tougher, more reliable crusher hammer heads. When the cement content is higher, it increases the risk of partial fracture of the hammer head.

If the feeding material is large, has high impact, but is less abrasive, you should choose high-manganese steel crusher hammer heads. Because high-manganese steel material has good toughness and is capable of work hardening. If there’s more aggregate, the abrasive is higher, but the impact resistance is not insufficient. In that case, the hammer head will wear rapidly.

If the feeding material is pure concrete with any reinforcement, you can choose high-chromium cast iron hammer heads. Because this material’s hammer mill head wear resistance is higher, it is very sensitive to reinforcement and drill bits uncrushing materials.

Why don't we recommend using hammer heads made of pure high-chromium material?

Because the Sand, Quartz, and Aggregates in the concrete have abrasiveness. High-chromium material has an advantage in this kind of recycling material. But concrete often comes with reinforcement, steel, nuts, and large-size concrete. High-chromium material has good hardness but poor toughness. When crushing these recycling materials, it is easy to crack or break.

Finally, when you choose the crusher hammer head material, we still suggest you confirm with us the crusher models, the largest feeding material size, reinforcement content, aggregate hardness and your crusher’s failure situation. We will carefully consider it and then give you our best suggestion.

Hammer Head for Recycling Waste Lead-Acid Batteries

Waste Lead-Acid Batteries are a special recycling material. After our analysis and our customers’ practical applications, we compared global manufacturers’ crusher hammer heads, Chinese manufacturers’ hammer heads, and our own research-and-development austenitic or martensitic hammer heads. We conducted a comprehensive study and comparative evaluation of their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. We find that crushing lead-acid batteries cannot simply follow the materials selection theory used for crushing ordinary waste steel. Lead-acid batteries not only experience impact and wear but also suffer from severe corrosion. Ordinary high-manganese steel and high-chromium cast iron are not the best choices. When selecting the material, we need to comprehensively consider corrosion resistance, hardness, elongation, and casting quality. Must refer to the batteries’ actual situation, temperature, and the crusher to decide the crusher hammer head’s material.

SUPER specially developed hammer mill hammer heads for crushing lead-acid batteries, not only get big advantages in hardness, toughness and wear resistance, but also have a strong corrosion resistance ability. If you want to know more about our hammer mill hammer heads for crushing lead-acid batteries, please feel free to let me know.

Why is the accuracy of the hammer head's dimensions so important?

The precision of the hammer head dimensions not only determines whether the hammer head can be properly installed on your crusher and operate normally, but also affects the intensity of material crushing and the crusher’s overall production capacity.

Our customers have reported that hammer mill hammer heads from other suppliers have caused their production to decline. Through our comprehensive analysis, we found that the crusher hammer head is 20 mm larger than the drawing indicates. This will lead the crusher hammer head’s strike style to change from edge strike to edge strike and bottom scraping. The extra piece will keep the recycling materials inside the chamber longer, increasing the hammer head’s load. Recycling materials can not be discharged in a timely manner from the crusher chamber, which leads to a decline in production.

The Importance of Hammer Head Counterweights and Rotor Balancing

Crushers for recycling materials typically operate at very high speeds and contain a large number of hammer heads; any variation in the weight of the hammer heads can cause the crusher to vibrate, increase the load on the bearings, and result in extremely uneven wear, thereby accelerating the failure of the hammer heads and the entire crushing system. So the crusher’s system consistency is very important. This is what more customers usually ignore.

So, are there any methods to meet the crusher’s balancing requirement?
We have 3 suggestions:ts.

So, are there any methods to meet the crusher’s balancing requirement? We have 3 suggestions:
1. Grouping Symmetrically by Average Weight
2. After sorting by weight, arrange the hammers with adjacent weights in symmetrical positions.
3. When replacing some hammer heads, we cannot consider only the weight of each part; we must also take into account their relative positions on the rotor.

To meet this requirement, we will weigh each crusher hammer head and mark its weight on it. You can quickly assign group numbers based on the weight of each hammer head, making it easy to distinguish between them and balance the weights.
