What is the best material for crusher hammer heads?

The best material for crusher hammer heads and crusher plate hammer is Bimetallic Composite Materials. As we all know, a single material has its advantages and disadvantages. When Hammer mill crusher heads are used for aggregate, they require hardness, strength, and toughness simultaneously. However, for a material or object, hardness and toughness are two conflicting properties. If a material has higher hardness, its toughness is lower, and it is very easy to break. On the contrary, when it has better toughness, it doesn’t have enough hardness to strike an object. According to the crusher’s working principle, the crusher hammer heads should be hard enough to strike the stones and rocks, especially on the hammer working end. But when the hammer is working, it is necessary to resolve the trade-off between wear resistance and impact resistance on the handle of the hammer, so it needs better toughness to avoid breakage. So only two different materials could meet this requirement. SUPER crusher hammer heads use High-Chromium(Chromium content (range: 14%–28%)) on the hammer working end with better hardness and wear resistance, and cast iron on the handle with excellent toughness. SUPER adopted this kind of material, improved the hardness, wear resistance, and toughness of the crusher hammer heads, and extended the service life. SUPER crusher hammer heads are your best choice.

Can you produce according to drawings or samples?

Producing crusher hammer heads according to drawings or samples is a basic ability for a foundry. And the most rigorous approach for producing crusher hammer heads is to use drawings or samples. Some customers have encountered situations where the sizes of the crusher hammer heads are not suitable for their crusher, or the hole size is not suitable for the shaft. Either the crusher hammer heads cannot be installed, or they are too loose once installed, which affects crushing efficiency and quality. This was because the product specifications and dimensions were not confirmed in advance. To produce a crusher hammer head, our technician needs to draw it first. The drawing includes key information such as overall length, width, thickness, mounting hole size, hole spacing, center distance, working end surface shape, rotor fitting area, and tolerances. Any error could result in the finished product not being compatible with your crusher. Some suppliers may ask you to measure the crusher hammer by yourself and provide the measurements. Some customers know how to measure it, but some are not good at it. The best way is to provide the drawings or samples. This could save you time and make sure we produce the right-sized products. Producing according to drawings or samples could, at most, avoid errors and mistakes.

What information is needed for quotation?

For a quotation, the necessary information is the dimensions of the crusher hammer, the materials to be crushed, the properties of the materials to be crushed, the property requirements of the crusher hammer, the crusher’s information, and the quantity. If you can provide the current crusher hammer’s performance and your expectations, that would be helpful. For the dimension of crusher hammer heads, you can send drawings, samples, or part numbers. Or we can guide you through measuring a crusher hammer head, and then you can send photos of the measuring tapes showing the key dimensions. For the properties of the materials to be crushed, it is better to provide the material hardness, abrasiveness, feed size, output size, daily working hours, crusher speed, moisture content under working conditions, and the materials to be crushed. The more information, the more suitable crusher hammer heads can be produced. What hardness and chemical composition can you provide?

What heat treatment do you use?

SUPER undergoes a heat treatment process involving “high-temperature quenching and low-temperature tempering.” We heat the cast hammer head to approximately 1100°C, hold it at that temperature, subject it to chemical water hardening, and then perform low-temperature tempering at 600°C–850°C. After this heat treatment, the hammer head achieves a better balance between hardness and toughness, allowing its performance to be fully realized.

How do you inspect quality before shipment?

SUPER’s quality inspection for crusher hammer heads includes material analysis, internal structure observation, analysis of key trace elements, hardness, wear resistance, toughness, fatigue testing, and dimension inspections.

We use a metallographic microscope to analyze the internal structure of crusher hammers and ensure they meet the requirements. We use a spectrometer to test elemental composition. These elements play a key role in the properties of crusher hammers. We also test the impurity content because higher impurity content will affect the crusher hammers’ properties. For hardness testing, we refer to ISO 6508 and ASTM E18. When we test wear resistance, we not only conduct the necessary abrasive wear testing but also place the sample in quartz sand and rotate it for a certain amount of time, then compare the weight after wear with the original weight. Our toughness testing is conducted on a hydraulic press under hundreds of thousands of cyclic loads to detect any cracks. In addition, we inspect the dimensions against the drawings and perform thermal resistance and extreme-cold resistance tests.

SUPER has comprehensive testing instruments and equipment, as well as a well-established inspection process, which ensures that every product delivered to you meets our standards. Please feel free to purchase and use this product with confidence.

Why do crusher hammer heads wear out quickly?

Crusher hammer heads wear out quickly, also called abnormal wear, often caused by many factors. Besides the quality and property issues of the crusher hammer, other reasons include whether the machine is running normally, whether it is suitable for the materials to be crushed, and whether the procedure is being followed correctly. Sometimes it is due to a single factor, and sometimes it is the result of multiple factors acting together.

The quality of the crusher hammer is often considered the primary reason. However, it should depend on the situation. Sometimes, the crusher hammer, made from lower-quality materials, has poor wear resistance. Or the casting/forging technology is not mature, and the heat treatment has issues. Or the structural designs of the crusher hammer have defects. All these could cause the crusher hammer to wear out quickly.

The second, proper operation of crushers can lead to the crusher hammer heads wearing out quickly. To improve efficiency and output capacity, workers often load large quantities of material to be fed, causing the crusher to operate under overload. This puts the crusher hammer in overload, causing the hammer head to wear out faster than at the designed speed.

The third is that the crusher hammer is suitable for the materials to be crushed. As we know, granite, basalt, and iron ore are super hard stones with high hardness requirements. However, limestone, coal, and clay are soft materials and don’t require high hardness. If we use the crusher hammer designed for soft materials on hard materials like granite, it wears out very quickly.

The aggregate plant environment is another factor that influences the wear-out speed. If the aggregate plant is damp, the material is more likely to stick to the hammer heads, which could cause partial wear-out and result in the whole crusher hammer wearing out quickly.

It needs an experienced engineer and technician to analyze the cause of the wear out quickly. Only by finding the right reason can you save wear-out costs, keep the crusher hammer head at peak crushing performance throughout its service life, reduce maintenance costs and downtime, and improve working efficiency. How can service life be improved?

What causes hammer heads to crack or break?

There are two main reasons for crusher hammer heads to crack or break: the hammer head itself, or installation or operation. The reason related to the crusher hammer head itself is that the raw material is not of sufficient quality, casting or forging technologies are not mature, and there are more impurities and heat-treatment issues. For example, our customers have told us that their crusher hammer heads from other suppliers are prone to cracking. After we take a sample and analyze it, we find a major issue with the raw material. The raw material’s hardness, wear resistance, and toughness do not meet the standards. When we review under the spectrometer, we find that the internal organization of the crusher hammer heads is uneven and has defects such as high-hardness martensite and coarse grain size. These are closely related to casting, forging, and heat treatment technologies. Some products were tempered at an inappropriate temperature, resulting in a significant decrease in toughness. Another reason related to the crusher hammer head itself is the material it is made of. As we know, when a crusher hammer is operating, the hammer head experiences impact and wear forces. The crusher handle suffers the impact force. So the hammer end face needs higher hardness and better wear resistance; the hammer handle should have greater toughness to avoid breaking. One material cannot meet both property requirements. SUPER uses the best method, Bimetallic Composite Materials. We use high-chromium, high-wear-resistance material on the hammer end surface and high-toughness Cast Steel in the handle. This not only meets the hammer head’s wear-resistance requirements but also makes the hammer handle less prone to breakage. Installation, machine operation, and the compatibility of materials to be crushed are other reasons. If the crusher hammer is too loose after installation, the handle will wear out quickly, resulting in breakage. If the hardness of materials to be crushed exceeds the maximum designed working hardness of the crusher hammer heads, they are easy to crack when working. SUPER uses Bimetallic Composite Materials to produce crusher hammer heads, allowing the hammer head to meet the requirements of wear resistance and toughness. At the same time, we have rigorous requirements for the dimensions. We must make sure the crusher hammer head fits your crusher perfectly to improve crushing efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
