What is the retainer, lock, and keeper in bucket tooth replacement, respectively?
Retainers, locks, and keepers are bucket-tooth replacement locking parts designed to hold the tooth pin or keep the position of bucket teeth in some bucket-tooth systems. Their names and structures vary by manufacturer and bucket tooth system.
Some bucket pins cannot perform the locking task on their own. They need to be used with a rubber retainer, Steel lock, Split washer, Spring element, System-specific keeper, and other parts.
Types of Bucket Tooth Pins SUPER Provides
SUPER offers the most common bucket pin brands, including Bobcat Bucket Teeth Pins, Excavator Bucket Teeth Pins, Excavator Bucket Teeth Keepers, Backhoe Bucket Teeth Pins, Esco Bucket Teeth Pins, Hensley Bucket Teeth Pins, John Deere Bucket Teeth Pins, Kubota Bucket Teeth Pins, and more.
These bucket tooth pins have different installation directions: horizontal and vertical. It depends on how the tooth and adapter system is designed. They aren’t interchangeable based on length and diameter alone.
SUPER workers are making sand molds for replacement bucket teeth.
How do these pins function as locks?
Grooved pins lock the bucket tooth with a retainer or clip. Roll pins provide holding force through their elastic rolled structure.
Hammerless bucket tooth pins are available on the market. This kind of bucket tooth pin is very convenient to install and disassemble. In most cases, they don’t need a hammer to install. However, please get in touch with the supplier for installation instructions.
If you want to purchase bucket tooth pins, please provide the necessary information, such as the pin part number or pin dimensions, bucket tooth system number, and required quality.
Please send us your bucket tooth pin part number so we can provide the best offer.
How to Identification, Measurement, and Selection Your Bucket Tooth Pins
The first simple way is to identify the bucket tooth pin number. This is the most accurate method.
Some customers identify the bucket tooth pin model by referring to the machine model, rather than the bucket tooth system. This is incorrect because even if the machine model is correct, the bucket may be sourced from a different place, the adapter may be replaced, the bucket may have a different aftermarket bucket tooth replacement, or there may be multiple versions of the original system. These factors can lead to different bucket tooth pin numbers. Your experience is very valuable to us.
If you can not find the bucket tooth pin number, please collect the bucket tooth number, adapter number, and system number; this will help us find the right pin number for you.
There’s another way – measure it. You can also measure the pin length and the outer diameter.
Excavator Bucket Tooth Pins
SUPER can provide excavator bucket tooth pins for select small, medium, and large excavator bucket tooth systems.
Backhoe Bucket Tooth Pins
A backhoe bucket has a front loader bucket and a rear backhoe bucket. They use different locking systems. When ordering backhoe bucket tooth pins, please confirm which one you need.
Bucket Tooth Pins for Different Brands and Tooth Systems
As noted above, we should select bucket tooth pins based on the installed bucket tooth system rather than the machine brand alone. The same machine brand may use different buckets, adapters, or aftermarket tooth systems.
Bobcat Bucket Teeth Pins
When you are looking for Bobcat bucket tooth pins, keep in mind the pins may come from the original system or be aftermarket components. Checking only the machine model may not identify the correct pin.
ESCO Bucket Teeth Pins
Identify ESCO bucket teeth pins by the specific tooth system series. Different systems may use a vertical pin, a one-piece pin, a rubber pin, or another locking system.
Hensley Bucket Teeth Pins
Hensley bucket teeth pins come in many types for different bucket teeth, systems, and sizes. Some Hensley bucket teeth pins have roll pins or flex pins. When choosing Hensley bucket teeth pins, identify the pin and keeper, not just the pin length.
John Deere Bucket Teeth Pins
John Deere official information shows that the Original Line and TK-Series locking systems differ. Please confirm the series and system before purchasing John Deere bucket teeth pins.
Kubota Bucket Teeth Pins
Kubota bucket teeth pins can be used with the original bucket, a replacement bucket, or an aftermarket tooth bar. Before ordering Kubota bucket teeth pins, please confirm the diameter, length, installation direction, and retainer type.
Heat Treatment of Bucket Teeth Pin
As you know, bucket teeth and adapters need heat treatment to improve hardness, toughness, wear resistance, and strength. Heat-treating bucket teeth and adapters can improve excavating performance, extend lifespan, and save you costs.
Do you know that some tooth pins also need heat treatment? When bucket teeth are in use, they experience shear loads, impact loads, repeated loading, and surface wear as the bucket teeth and adapters move, as well as forces during installation and removal. If the pins are softer, bending, mushrooming, groove wear, surface deformation, premature loosening, and other situations will occur. However, if the pin is harder but less tough, it can suffer brittle fracture, crack initiation, and break under impact.
To maintain better performance, we usually heat-treat bucket teeth pins.

How SUPER Test Bucket Teeth, Adapters and Tooth Pins?
With over 40 years of manufacturing experience in aftermarket replacement bucket teeth, adapters, and pins, SUPER has the most advanced testing system to support GET parts with the best performance for your working conditions.
We typically conduct Chemical Composition Analysis, Mechanical Impact Testing, Hardness Testing, Metallographic Analysis, and Microstructural Analysis of Impact Fracture Surfaces to inspect and analyze the properties of bucket teeth, adapters, and pins.
Bucket teeth, adapters, and pins together make up this main part of the GET system. Bucket teeth excavate soil, rocks, and other materials, cutting and cracking them, and generate relative motion between the bucket teeth surface and the excavated material. This movement increases friction and accelerates bucket-teeth wear. When bucket teeth dig excavated material in hard ground, they experience impact forces from the material. Our complete testing system can analyze the bucket teeth, adapters, and pins’ material composition and structure, and determine their impact and wear resistance. Then, we test real impact resistance and hardness on test equipment. We also inspect for internal defects to reduce potential risks during use.

What are the requirements for bucket teeth when excavating frozen soil?
Excavating thawed soil is relatively easy because it typically consists of minerals and organic matter. However, frozen soil consists of solid mineral particles, ice inclusions, frozen water, and other materials. Frozen soil is 10 to 20 times harder than thawed soil. Furthermore, the work environment is typically extremely cold, making excavation extremely difficult and requiring a very high level of technical expertise.
SUPER has many customers who need to excavate frozen soil. They are located in high-latitude countries, such as Canada, the northern United States, South Africa, Argentina, and Chile. The excavation conditions they face are among the harshest and most challenging in the world. As required, SUPER analyzed how to improve excavation efficiency in frozen soil.
SUPER adopted the SHBP experiment to simulate frozen-soil working conditions and obtain frozen-soil HJC model parameters. After hundreds or even thousands of experiments, along with collaborative testing with customers and feedback analysis, we found that wedge–shaped bucket teeth are better for excavating frozen soil because they are more likely to dig into the soil. Another point is that excavating efficiency is highest when the bucket teeth and the ground or excavated material form a 45° angle. Hope this information helps if you have similar working requirements.

What are the requirements for bucket teeth when excavating frozen soil?
Most customers use high-manganese steel bucket teeth on large mining sites. However, the harsh working environment often causes bucket teeth to fail, wear out, and break. Excavators and loaders must shut down, resulting in greater indirect economic losses.
Bucket teeth wear is a form of abrasive wear caused by chipping. When bucket teeth contact mineral ore, they experience impact forces. When the bucket teeth penetrate the mineral ore pile, the ore slides over the bucket teeth surface, causing the ore edge to cut or plow the bucket teeth surface. This type of wear is characterized by high-impact, high-stress sliding abrasive wear. The harder and larger the mineral ore, and the higher the impact speed, the faster the bucket teeth wear down. Bucket teeth service life can range from several days to many months. In addition to hardness and wear resistance, bucket teeth need better toughness to resist bending or breaking under impact and cantilever loads.
In high-manganese materials, only strong impact can form a hard surface layer with better wear resistance. So, when the mineral ore is smaller, softer, or the penetration speed is slower, the hard layer may not be hard enough. This improves the wear resistance of high-manganese steel.
The ideal material for large mineral mining bucket teeth has excellent surface hardness and wear resistance, plus outstanding hardness and toughness in the tooth body. SUPER has developed and introduced advanced technical materials, making its service life rank among the world’s best. We use high-manganese steel or low-carbon alloy steel as the base material and cast it in hard alloy or high-chromium white cast iron, effectively enhancing bucket-teeth wear resistance and fully leveraging the toughness-hardness combination of these two materials.
Based on feedback from multiple large-scale mines in countries including the United States, Canada, Kazakhstan, Egypt, the Philippines, and China, bucket-teeth service life has increased by at least 40 percent, with some regions reporting even higher gains.
